WHY ARE PIKAS IN DANGER?

Found mainly in high elevation sites on mountain slopes, pikas are in danger. They can't survive for longer than twenty minutes in temperatures above 70°F, so they rely on the cool spaces between the rock piles they call home. However, as the earth warms, pikas are forced higher and higher upslope to stay cool. Eventually, there is nowhere higher to go, and populations die out. Pikas do not migrate.

Reduced snowpack means less insulation for winter.

Pikas are disappearing across the Great Basin and the Sierra Nevada mountains. They currently have no protections under the Endangered Species Act.
